What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD), a natural and active compound found in hemp plants has long been used by sufferers of pain and has some notable properties include things like:

  • A reduction in the sensation of pain
  • The improvement of comfort
  • The reduction of inflammation
  • Antioxidant properties
  • Reduction in nausea
  • Stress relief

It is these properties that make CBD much more diverse than other medications not to mention there are far fewer concerns about safety and side effects compared to strong opioid analgesics. Furthermore hemp derived CBD products and marijuana derived CBD products show much less potential for abuse.

You can take your CBD product of choice as often as you need and as high a strength as suits your requirements. There is no need for a prescription, simply go to your favourite online store, choose a product that is in line with your lifestyle and needs and have it delivered promptly to your door.

Always check with your GP before taking CBD, especially if you’re on existing medication.

Oils And Edibles, How To Take Them & The Benefits

CBD products have evolved hugely over the last few years and as research into medical marijuana continues to grow, CBD has become widely acknowledged for its capabilities in treating pains and conditions.

Medical cannabis (including CBD) is used globally by health professionals for treatment of things like (just to name a few):

  • Cancer pain and cancer related pain
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Anxiety
  • Chronic pain treatment
  • Neuropathic pain
  • PTSD and other stress related disorders

Let us take a look at how CBD can help us towards achieving pain relief.

Oral Cbd Oils

How to take CBD oil

Oral CBD oils for pain are easy to take whether at home or on the move as they are usually in pocket sized dropper bottles that are ideal for your pocket or bag and simple to use. The ideal dose varies from person to person but most CBD oil manufacturers recommend between 2-3 drops and then to dose again if and when required.

Always start with 2-3 drops and wait to see the effects, if your desired effects aren't achieved then dose until you reach your desired level of relief. Remember, CBD oil can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours to work so when starting out with CBD be patient, finding the correct dosage for you will save you money in the long run.

There are a range of ways to enjoy your CBD, these include:

  • In food
  • Dissolved in water
  • Held under the tongue
  • Sprayed directly into the mouth

Dosing oral CBD is relatively simple and it is easy to control the dosage level. Again like most CBD, oils are available in an abundance of strengths, flavours and also in different size dropper bottles or sprays, allowing you to control your dosage; the advice is start low and build up over time when you’ve judged the effects.

Choosing the right CBD oil

The market is huge and there is a product out there to suit each of us; there are even oils with extra supplements inside, such as turmeric, providing more benefits in each drop.

Choosing a high quality CBD is made easier when you shop with a trusted retailer like us at ICE Headshop. You will yield better results and using high quality CBD makes dosing more accurate and manageable.

CBD oil comes measured in % of concentrate and mg per ml. Essentially, the higher the % and mg per ml the stronger the effects. As recommended by most CBD oil suppliers, start with 2-3 drops and top up as required.

Bear in mind, some oils are not water soluble and need to be held under the tongue and others can be sprayed into your mouth. Be sure to read the instructions and as stated, consult with your GP.

Edibles

Edibles are another easy (and tasty) way to get your dose of CBD, they also offer a more discreet method of pain management if you’re concerned about dosing with oils in public or at work.

In our online store there are hundreds of types of CBD edibles made by top CBD brands of all different shapes, sizes and flavours, there really is something to suit each individual taste. Because of their ease of use and, well, because they are simply delicious we find that CBD edibles are super easy to integrate into our daily routine. No need to hold oil under your tongue or apply topical CBD products at the office or at home, simply enjoy the taste of your CBD edible whenever you feel the need.

Here are a couple of our favourite CBD edibles:

How Does CBD Help With Pain?

Our bodies have a cell signalling system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS) which is found throughout our central nervous system and peripheral nervous system, in our brain and all around our body. CBD products interact with a core component of the endocannabinoid receptors in your brain and immune system. The receptors are tiny proteins attached to your cells, which receive signals, mostly chemical ones from different stimuli and help your cells respond. This response creates pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects that help with pain management.

Lots of the products available now do not necessarily have to be metabolised via digestion (for example a vape or mouth spray can be absorbed almost instantly), meaning that the effects can be felt faster and stronger. There are a wide range of products like:

  • Oils that can be ingested directly (under the tongue) or solubilised in water
  • Oils that can be inhaled through a vape
  • Edible confectionary like jellies or chocolate, even teas and coffees
  • Smokable herbs or resins

The Best Cbd Oils For Pain

The best CBD oil for you is down to personal preference and requirements, unlike some other medicines and health or dietary supplements. For example, someone experiencing a high level of pain consistently from a chronic disease, condition or injury would more than likely benefit greater from a higher concentrate full spectrum CBD at a larger dose than, for example, someone who suffers from a small amount of pain intermittently due to a previous niggling sports injury, in which case a milder CBD isolate would be better suited.

It is important for you as individuals to be able to dose yourselves as and when you need it and use a product that is in line with your ailment or pain type for the best results. You need to adjust and experiment with the dosing in order to get the most out of your product. For example you can use water soluble CBD oil in the morning dissolved in a glass of water or in your food three times a day. You could use a CBD vape as little or as much as you need throughout the day so long as it is working for you.

What is important is that you choose a product that fits into your daily routine easily so that relieving your pain is little effort, leaving you as much time as possible to enjoy your day.

Chronic and acute pain

We all have a different tolerance for pain and certainly we all have different coping mechanisms. When we talk about pain we often hear ‘acute’ or ‘chronic’ pain. What is the difference?

  • Acute pain can be mild and last just a moment, or it might be severe and last for weeks or months
  • Chronic pain is pain that is ongoing and usually lasts more than 6 months

CBD is a very diverse product, enabling relief for many symptoms of many illnesses, diseases and conditions. Whether your pain is chronic or acute, CBD can be tailored to your specific requirements and can often take the place of your regular over the counter or prescribed medicines. Of course be sure to check with your GP if you are on any medications before using CBD.

CBD For Back Pain

Long, dull back ache is an uncomfortable pain to have to endure and paracetamol and prescription painkillers are not a long-term solution.

Although many back aches can be attributed to spinal cord injury or skeletal problems, many go without answer. CBD is available as ointment, cream, topical balms and lotions. When applied, the CBD soaks directly into the skin, nourishing the skin and then providing relief from aches, pains and inflammation.

If you are looking to relieve pain in your back and haven't yet tried CBD then now is the time to get involved. For back pain you can use edibles, vape and topical CBD (or any other CBD for that matter), there really is no specific method. Choose a product that you will be able to use easily and one that is in line with your pain relief needs.

Here are a few of our favourite balms and lotions:

Infinity CBD Sports Balm 1000mg

This high strength muscle rub is designed for post-sports and it soothes muscles deeply. This can be massaged directly onto the affected area to relieve pain in muscles and joints. Use this rub after a hardcore workout or to relieve those achy or stiff areas.

Apply this cream directly to the affected area for instant relief. Available in 2 different strengths 750mg and 1500mg per 120ml.

Endometriosis And CBD

Endometriosis, which is a painful disorder in which tissue, similar to the tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus (the endometrium), grows outside of the uterus and in other places. There is currently no cure for endometriosis and unfortunately more research is needed.

Endometriosis is a very painful condition and affects 1 out of every 10 women. Most drugs that are used to treat endometriosis aren't beneficial in the long run and don't make the grade for dealing with high levels of pain and discomfort. Moreover, surgical procedures for dealing with endometriosis are invasive and painful. CBD is a simple supplement which can help to provide some relief for the symptoms of endometriosis. If surgery is part of your treatment, always check in with your doctor if you would like to try using a CBD product.

Arthritis And CBD

Arthritis is a condition that causes pain and inflammation in joints. In the UK alone there are over 10 million people that have arthritis or similar conditions, including but not limited to: rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, cervical spondylosis, ankylosing spondylosis, gout and lupus. Some of the symptoms of arthritis and similar conditions are inflammation and joint pain, both of which we know CBD can help to ease symptoms of.

Alternative CBD For Pain Relief

Picking your preferred type of CBD can be the tricky bit; for example, a lot of us haven't vaped before but for those among us who do, this is a fast and reliable way to get your CBD.

If you're not sure about what your CBD options are, here are a couple of other alternative CBD products that may suit you:

Kaam CBDPatches

Introducing the Kaam CBD Patch, the world’s first CBD and hemp oil patch with omega-3. This CBD patch is a stress free way to get your daily CBD dose, each patch contains 8mg of CBD. Stick the patch on an area of skin without hair and also avoid genitals, face and neck. This patch works for 24 hours and is recommended 1 patch per day. These patches come with the extra health benefits of omega-3 which is scientifically proven to help with a range of health issues.

Dr. Trichome Cannastick Vape Pen 300mg

This premium disposable vape pen contains 100% real organic cannabis terpenes and a whopping 150mg CBD and 150mg CBG. There are 3 different flavours inspired by three original cannabis strains and each vape contains up to 300 puffs!

Dosage And Expected Results

As we have looked at previously, dosage with CBD is entirely dependent on individual needs and on the symptoms that you are trying to treat. It is probably not a good idea to treat a mild ache with the strongest possible full spectrum CBD vape liquid, nor would it be helpful to use a low % and mg CBD isolate for severe chronic pain.

Each product comes with a recommendation of general dosage, from there you can tailor it to your own needs. If three drops of full spectrum CBD oil at 6% isn't providing you with all day relief why not try a top up in the afternoon of another couple of drops.

Cbd Isolate Or Cbd Full Spectrum For Treating Pain?

Struggling to choose between an isolate or full spectrum CBD?

CBD full spectrum contains other terpenes and cannabinoids from the cannabis plant which makes it a more complete and wholesome product. These cannabinoids work together to create something called the entourage effect. The other cannabinoids and terpenes in full spectrum oil help to play a crucial role in achieving “The Entourage Effect” - this is the cannabinoids all working together in synergy to create greater effect.

CBD isolate doesn't contain any other cannabinoids, terpenes or flavonoids. CBD crystals are purified CBD that has been extracted from industrial hemp and isolated from other cannabinoids. If you are looking for a product containing pure CBD then a high-quality and lab-tested product from a trusted retailer is the way to go.
